Hi Guys,

I’m Ruth, an upcoming voiceover artist with a dream of voicing my own Disney character. I know it seems far-fetched, but I believe dreams do come true, so stick with me on this journey to find out if mine did.

I’m sure you must be wondering, “Why the heck do we need another blog?’ Trust me, I felt the same way, but hear me out.

This is not going to be just a blogging space or dump yard,

But an interactive place to share my transitioning journey with you and you can share your journey with me, share what’s new in the voiceover landscape, dos and don’ts I’m learning, share our pains and triumphs, maybe debate a little, but mainly to just connect. I hope we can learn from each other and build a strong voiceover community that sets standards and positively impacts the industry.

I’m sure you must be wondering what I mean by “transition journey.” Don’t worry, I will fill you in, but for now, let me answer a quick question: Voiceover with Ruth? Mena Studios? How do they fit? 

Well, here’s how this puzzle came to be.

My Story

Frankly, if I am formally addressed as Barrister Ruth (fancy huh?!).

Yeah! I started my professional journey as a U.K. trained lawyer, then graduated with a Master’s in law from UCLA (University of California Los Angeles) in the U.S.A., and finally got Call to Bar in Nigeria. (I know, right? I can move).

 I can practice in California and Nigeria, and I did but after about a year and a few months, I found it boring. Gush! If I heard one more Objection, Adjournment or read any more contracts, I was ready to let it rip, let it all go.

One Afternoon, as I sat at my desk as a junior lawyer looking ahead at my seniors, I knew that day I did not want this life for myself, and that was the last day I showed up. No resignation letter, no notice, I just cleared my table, picked my bags, left and never looked back.

I decided I wanted to be an entrepreneur and have a business, so I chose to run a multi-level marketing business. It was crazy out of my lane, especially cause math was now involved (can I get a hand raise for my math non-lovers), but with the aid of a mentor, I was able to build a nationwide business with a team of over 200 people.

My major challenge was having to unlearn the old mindset about failure and relearn how to stand up after a fall. Trust me, I fell so many times and bruised my head and knee, but I learnt so many skills: negotiation, presentation, team building and management. It shaped me as a person, as it still does, because I created growth habits I still use today.

Unfortunately, due to bad partnership, some mishap and very bad illness, I lost my business. I was devastated; I had lost it all. 3 years disappeared in the drain with nothing to show.

In my brokenness, I took a job with an advertising agency in Nigeria as a Business Development Manager (BDM). I wanted to put my sales and marketing skills to work (after all it was my life for the last 3 years).

While working for the start-up, I realized that I had grown digitally. I understood social platforms, marketing, video creation and editing, and email marketing. I had developed a bank of skills I did not know my business-building days had left in me. This sparked a new desire to learn everything about digital marketing and online branding. 2 certifications later, I was a qualified digital marketer.

While working for the Ad Agency, a client wanted a video with a voiceover. The AI voice used by the production team was not liked, so I was asked to voice the Ad for the travel agency. They loved it. The Ad was well received in Lagos, and they had a lot of clicks from the video Ad.

Hence, my true talent came to life. I was created to use my voice to tell compelling stories to help brands and their audience connect better.

From this, “MENA STUDIOS” was born as a professional voiceover recording studio.

“VOICEOVER WITH RUTH” came to life to share/bring a more personal touch.

And now, I am in Kitchener, ON, CA chasing my dreams. I guess the 4th country was the charm.

Mena comes from the full Eastern Nigerian name “Mgbemena” which means “bad things shall not happen.”

It is built on the sense of community banding together, “so together bad things shall not befall them”.  “Mena” as a stand-alone means “to happen”.

MICROPHONE JOURNEY

The journey before me excites me, not for the destination of financial independence (we know that’s the goal) but for the endless possibilities that lie ahead.

The ability to travel the world, see and experience different cultures, share my story and voice and create a lasting memory of a compilation of moments shared with different people, across different parts, at different times. The grace to enjoy and bask in the beauty of life rather than running the rat race.

To wake daily inspired, filled with new air, new voice, new story, this is my bliss.
